INNOVATION GRANTS
The HITEC Technology
Innovation Grants are an important part of the Community Development
through Technology Innovation Program (CD-TIP). Funded by the Ford
Foundation, the goals of the Technology Innovation Grants are as
follows:
Promote Innovation in Community Technology
Promote Creative Use of Public Space
Develop Community Assets
Impact Community Development and Issues
Expand Capacity and Impact of Community Technology Centers
(CTCs)
Through a competitive process the following 7
programs were awarded a combined total of nearly $100,000:
Visiting Nurses Association
Technology and Health
The Nurse in Our Community Program creatively
utilizes the “public” area of Independence Hall to promote a better
community. Health technology in a common area enables resident
participants to provide their vital signs and other relevant information
electronically to VNA tele-monitoring registered nurses. Remote daily
monitoring and periodic on-site wellness presentations help residents
maintain their health and identify negative changes before serious
and/or more costly intervention is required.
Genesys ITS/Houston Technology Center (HTC)
Collaboration
Technology –
Entrepreneurship and Education
The Genesys – HTC Student Entrepreneurship Program
offers Entrepreneurial training and course credit from Houston Community
College; In-depth information and hands on application about business
ownership; Student run companies sell student refurbished PCs to earn a
real wage, fund college scholarships, and support the program for the
next class of student entrepreneurs.
People in Partnership/Community Cinema
Collaboration
Technology - Cultural
History and Media
The collaboration between People in Partnership and
Community Cinema uses media training and digital tools to prepare youth
for the future of the cultural arts district in Fifth Ward. The media
trained youth will use their newly developed expertise to capture and
the rich history of the Sunnyside community.
East Harris County Senior Center/Tejano Center for
Community Concerns Collaboration
Technology and
Inter-Generational Literacy
Collaboration between Unique Public Space (Senior
Cyber Café) and Youth Literacy Program is working to promote Computer
Literacy among Seniors Citizens and Improved Reading Literacy among High
School Seniors.
Museum Of Cultural Arts Houston (MOCAH)
Technology – Art and Civic
Engagement
Through the ArtKidTeks program, MOCAH will provide
access to computer technology and art training to at least 15 children
and other neighborhood residents in the East End community. Youth
involved in the ArtKidTeks program will participate in residencies where
they will learn how to: Play SimCity4 ©, an interactive video game
designed to allow a user to create, build and run a realistic city. Use
City of Houston Geographic Information and Management System and Design
and develop public art community development projects.
Alliance for Multi-Cultural Concerns
Technology and Economic
Development
Alliance Community Technology Center used to enhance
public space as a tool for Small Business Development amongst a
predominately immigrant community. This project uses the Community
Technology Center as a central point for meeting to develop the plans
and the skills necessary to develop this underutilized business strip.
TechnoMerica
Technology and Financial
Literacy in Public Space
TechnoMerica, a Community Technology Center and
technology focused non-profit partners with Community Development
Corporation Pyramid CDC to bring wireless access to the Power Center
Conference as an enhancement to TechnoMerica’s Financial Literacy and
other community work.
